WWE2K14 is about 2 weeks away from hitting retail outlets and it is clear that the game’s development staff is not coasting towards the finish line. 2K Sports might be very close to the next release in their wrestling franchise, but regardless of that they’re still announcing new stuff for this year’s edition. This time the new thing is called The Streak.

Like many sports games released these days, the Streak is a mode that is all about a legendary athlete that has dominated the sport in question. In this case, WWE2K14′s new Streak mode is all about Mark William Calaway, but you may know him by his ring name: The Undertaker. The name of the mode is a reference to the 21-0 Wrestlemania Streak that the Undertaker has defended since 2011.
This new Streak mode will reside inside the 30 Years of Wrestlemania campaign, and it’s divided into 2 different game types. The first game type is Defend the Streak, were you play as the Undertaker defending your streak from wave after wave of the men on the WWE’s roster. Your health will carry over from round to round, so winning doesn’t seem to be the point. Actually, it looks like the goal will be to hold on for as long as possible, and afterwards the game will rank you based on various criteria. Once your body slams have been converted into points, you’ll also have the chance to post the results of each game of Defend the Streak to an online leader-board.

The other half of the Streak mode is the Defeat the Streak game type. In this game type you pick any wrestler at Wrestlemania, including your customer made wrestling star if you want, and you try to defeat the Undertaker and end the streak. Although, that’s not going to be as easy as you think. The Undertaker’s streak is so impressive that it has inspired the development team behind WWE2K14 to make a 5th difficulty level for this mode. Before there was only EASY, NORMAL, HARD, and LEGEND levels of difficulty. Now there is a mode that is more difficult than LEGEND, and they’re simply calling it the UNDERTAKER difficulty. Play at that level and you’re basically playing 2K’s best representation of what it would be like to face the actual Undertaker at Wrestlemania, and that includes some of the paranormal aspects of the Undertaker’s arsenal. For example, the Undertaker could turn off the lights in the arena until he’s right behind you.
Not a fan of the Undertaker? I am sure you’ll enjoy the Defeat the Streak game type, but 2K Sports has predicted your negative feelings as well. As a result, they’ve taken the Defend the Steak part of the Streak Mode and turned it into an endless wave of wrestlers taking on anyone of your choosing. That’s called the Slobber-Knocker, and you’ll be able to locate it in the “exhibition” part of the disc.

The final part of this new Streak mode is how it acts like a virtual museum dedicated to the Undertaker and his streak. By playing the Streak mode you can unlock profiles of the Undertaker’s past Wrestlemania opponents, digital images from the actual events, a history of the Undertaker, and also track your Streak mode statistics.

The developers behind 2K’s WWE games also used this opportunity to announce a few updates that they made to existing modes. Their biggest focus for these improvements appears to revolve around the customization aspects of the Universe mode, like with the new Rivalry Manager.
The Rivalry Manager does exactly like the name advertises. You now have the chance to set the parameters of your rivalries. Before, that was something that the game did for you, but now you can changes things like how long you’re rivalries last, if it is a team rivalry, and who participates in that rivalry. By choosing your rivals, you’ll also have a chance to influence the type of stories that are generated in your universe.

Other notable upgrades to the customization of the Universe mode include: all diva shows, a large assortment of brand new story lines, and even the ability to construct your own championships. Actually, that last bit about the championships was announced last week, but the yet unknown part is that you can also import your custom championships into the Universe mode, into new tournaments inside the exhibition mode, and other parts of the game.

Just in case that news from last week about the championships was also brand new information for you, the team behind WWE2K14 announced a whole bunch of other stuff about 7 days ago. Things like the fact that you can now use current wrestlers as the template for your own custom wrestler. Since the all-stars of wrestling are now your starting point, you can either build an original wrestler on their frame or simply alter the look of a current wrestlers. For example, make an alternate attire versions of those wrestlers.
There’s also new functionality inside Superstar Threads. This year you’ll have deeper customization options for your entrance attire.
